THE THEME OF THIS NIGHT IS VISUALIZING AND EMBODYING THE CONNECTION BETWEEN TRADITIONAL INDIAN MUSIC & CULTURE, AND HIP-HOP. HOLDING ON TO TRADITION HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN ACT AGAINST ASSIMILATION. BOTH CULTURES HAVE BEEN MISREPRESENTED AND MISCONSTRUED DUE TO COMMERCIALIZATION. BY REACHING BACK AND RECLAIMING OUR ROOTS, THIS NIGHT WILL BE NOTED AS THE EVOLUTION AND RE-AFFIRMATION OF OUR RESISTANCE.

The film highlights the story of organizer Larry Itliong and the Manongs, Filipino farm workers who initiated the famous 1965 Delano Grape Boycott & Strike. The Manongs also fought alongside Mexican farm workers for the formation of the United Farm Workers Union.

Panel Discussion (4pm)

• Gilbert Padilla - United Farm Workers Union co-founder. A member of the Community Service Organization (CSO) from 1955 to 1960.

• Alex Fabros - Farm Labor Movement Historian, past farm worker who was mentored  by the farm working Manongs.

• Marc Grossman - Cesar Chavez’s longtime press secretary and personal aide.  Cesar Chavez Foundation Communications Director.

• Lorraine Agtang - One of the last surviving Filipino American grape strikers, member of Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC), &  first manager of the Paulo Agbayani Retirement Village.

• Humberto Gomez - Retired union leader of the UFW and Laborors International Union of North America (LIUNA).

• Willie Lopez - Moderator : Activist, former migrant worker, former FSU professor, Director of Teatro De Las Cucarachas & national motivational speaker.

Larry Itliong Memorial Presentation

By  son Johnny Itliong.  Honoring his fathers legacy, who was the leader of the Agricultural Workers Organizers Committee (AWOC) whose group merged with Chavez’ National Farm Workers Organization (NFW), creating the United Farm Workers (UFW). Itliong served as Vice President and Chavez served as President of the UFW.
